District 4 Expands Softball Programs
District 4 Little League is pleased to announce the addition of new softball leagues for Spring 2010! These new leagues will expand the opportunities to girls in our district to play Little League Softball and be eligible for all the same Little League benefits that the boys currently have.
Starting the ball rolling this spring was Peachtree City Little League. The league has only offered baseball and Challenger in the past, but several parents in the league with girls began inquiring about Little League Softball. Even though there is a fine youth softball program in the community, these parents wanted their girls to play games that were longer than the 1-hour games the local program offered. They also wanted their girls to have the opportunity to participate in the Little League tournament structure that leads to the Little League World Series. For Spring 2010, the league is offering girls softball for ages 9 - 16 and hopes to expand the divisions to include Minor League and Tee Ball for fall. For more information on Peachtree City Little League Softball, contact Mike Dunlap: dunlap2596@bellsouth.net or visit the Peachtree City Little League website.
Clayton County brought all their softball programs into Little League for the Spring 2010 season. They have ages 7 - 16 for spring, offering Minor League, Major League and Senior League Softball for the girls in their county. The county is divided into a north league and a south league. For information about playing in the northern part of the county, contact Bill Boyd: bill.boyd@co.clayton.ga.us. For information about playing in the southern part of the county, contact Adeal Bell: adeal.bell@co.clayton.ga.us.
We look forward to playing a schedule of interleague games with our new Clayton County leagues.
Last, but certainly not least, the Griffin-Spalding Youth Softball Association joined the District 4 Little League family in February. They bring a full program for girls ages 4 - 16, with plans to expand to age 18 in the near future. They play out of Volunteer park in Griffin, right behind Home Depot. They also will join the interleague play schedule for spring 2010.
Little League Softball was established in 1974 and currently has more than 25,000 teams and 360,000 participants worldwide. Little League Softball is proud to be one of the only youth softball organizations to partner with National Pro Fastpitch, featuring direct links to the pros for skills, drills, and educational content. Aside from teaching the sport of softball, Little League prides itself on strengthening the self-esteem of its participants, and promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.
