What You Hear When You Aren’t Coaching from the Sidelines

The concept of "Silent Saturdays" is an annual focus on my kids' youth soccer calendar. It's typically a day on the schedule that is highly promoted to parents and coaches. The idea is for parents to sit on the sidelines and watch the game. And to let the children playing on the field participate free of commentary. No cheers, no encouragement, and, most importantly, no coaching.

It's an incredibly simplistic idea, but I've always been amazed at the change in the emotional atmosphere of the game experience. During that one game, you see the kids more clearly because you can truly hear them and only them. Read More ...

Highlights from the 2017 MLB Little League Classic

Coming August 19, 2018

Mets vs Phillies

MLB Little League Classic

2018 MLB Little League Classic to be Played August 19

Major League Baseball (MLB), the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and Little League® International jointly announced today that the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets will play in the second "MLB Little League Classic" in Williamsport, Pa., during the 2018 MLB Championship Season. The special Regular Season contest, as well as ancillary activities by each club, will take place on Sunday, August 19th, with the game airing nationally that evening on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" and ESPN Radio at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

"This year's MLB Little League Classic was one of the most historic, memorable occasions in the 70-plus-year history of the Little League Baseball World Series," said Stephen D. Keener, Little League President and CEO. "The 16 teams that participated in this year's Little League Baseball World Series had an unforgettable experience at this year's MLB Little League Classic, and we're thrilled that the Little Leaguers competing in next year's World Series will also have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the day with the Phillies and the Mets at the Little League International Complex and at the MLB Little League Classic."

MLB and the MLBPA will host the next iteration of the "MLB Little League Classic," which successfully launched in August 2017 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals, at the renovated Historic Bowman Field, the home of the Phillies' Class-A Williamsport Crosscutters of the NY-Penn League. Once again, the participating players, coaches and families of the 2018 Little League Baseball World Series, as well as local Williamsport youth baseball & softball organizations, will fill a significant portion of the capacity at Bowman Field.

Major Leaguers on the Phillies and Mets will attend Little League Baseball World Series games earlier in the day on August 19th, which again demonstrates the players' passion and commitment to helping grow the game at the youth level.

Historic Bowman Field, in which Major League Baseball and the State of Pennsylvania invested a multi-million dollar renovation prior to the 2017 MLB Little League Classic, opened in 1926. It is the second oldest Minor League ballpark in the United States. More than 560 Major Leaguers, including Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Bill Mazeroski, Jim Rice and Jim Bunning, have worn a professional baseball uniform for Williamsport.

The Little League Baseball® World Series is an international championship tournament for children, ages 10-12, held annually in Williamsport, the headquarters for Little League International. Each year, countries from around the world compete on a global stage, with games airing on ESPN and streamed via the ESPN App.
